MY Bamboo

For Project 2, we were to design and construct a 1:1 structure for a specific activity, in groups. The structure was placed in a real dormant green space to activate its use. We worked with Bamboo and we were required to understand the nature and characteristics of the material and demonstrate basic knowledge in construction. We also explored construction details, e.g. joints, joinery, and structural quality with other supporting materials (rope, steel, tensile fabric). We developed our design through a series of workshops, tests, and investigations involving scaled study models, exploring architectural elements and principles (learned from Project 1), and incorporating anthropometry and ergonomics into your 1:1 structure.

Space and Sensory

In this Project, we re-examined our models from Project 1 and develop it into a series of Sensorial Spaces with a total volumetric boundaries of 30m³ anticipating user’s journey, experience and emotion. We translated the spatial narrative into an architectural journey of path-portal-place. Developing the sensorial experience of your “path-portal-place”, guided by design principles, structure, materiality, anthropometry, ergonomics and architectural narrative via multiple test models and drawings.

Reflection

This module has been very interesting and enjoyable. I've learned a lot about the basics of architecture. I have improved my ability to produce models and understand anthropometrics and ergonomics. The lectures were very informative and helpful as they were mainly what I referred to as I did my assignments. My overall learning experience was very good.

The projects given in this module were very helpful to make me understand basic architecture design elements, design principles, structure, anthropometrics and ergonomics. My tutor Ms. Chang Yan Yee was very helpful in giving each student individual analysis of our projects and helped us to create the best possible outcomes. She is also our module coordinator and made sure everyone got informed about our classes and other important announcements every week and organizes the lectures very efficiently.

The main learning platforms I used were MyTimes, Facebook and Telegram. MyTimes allows access for me to go through my lecture slides and provide me information about my modules and allows me to submit all my works on one platform. The main platforms used for announcements and other important notices were Telegram and Facebook. Both these platforms allowed smooth communication between the student and the tutors.
